I'm a big fan of fresh starts.
I've definitely had my fair share of blogs. Most recently, I wrote a blog with my friend called Smoking' Nutmeg, but I unfortunately started it in a period of time that was a bit hectic. I was in the middle of student teaching which, if you know anything about it, is time consuming and stressful. As a result, we abandoned the blog and coming back months later didn't feel right. That is where I'm Trying, Ringo comes in.
The title for the blog comes from my favorite scene from my favorite movie, Pulp Fiction. Here is the scene, if you've never seen it. In particular, my favorite part is the monologue by Jules Winfield (who is played by Samuel L. Jackson). He says:
"There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you." Now... I been sayin' that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, that meant your ass. You'd be dead right now. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before I popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin' made me think twice. See, now I'm thinking: maybe it means you're the evil man. And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here... he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. And I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd."
The delivery. The writing. It is a cinematic masterpiece. But Jules' words resonates with me. He considers himself in every scenario of his verse, but concedes he is the worst of the bunch. But he's trying to change his way. I don't know why, but the quote always gets to me. I feel I'm also trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd too, whatever that means in my life (which changes from time to time). I always think back to the quote whenever I make a decision. Whatever my current path is, I'm trying hard to live the best possible one. It's such a profound quote to me that I think it is proper to make it the name of my blog.
I have a lot of things planned for this blog. You will see articles about: wrestling, baseball, football, basketball, film, fantasy sports, television, music, video games, gambling, urban legends, the paranormal, writing, reading, travel, comics, fashion, teaching, marijuana, politics, technology and much more. I have so many interests and I want to write about all of them. I'm not sure what exactly that will look like, but you will see in due time.
My goal is simple: Consistently write, and those will come in a variety of different subjects. Whether it be one article or ten... Just anything. I also have some articles from previous blogs that I'd like to move to this site. We will see how it goes. Hopefully, if you read this, you enjoy. Any suggestions are welcome as well, and can be sent to me in the comments (for now).
